Therapeutic Radiographer Apprentices work towards a three year BSc Therapeutic Radiography qualification with Sheffield Hallam University. They are employed by the Provider Trust as Apprentices which allows them 20% of their time dedicated to study, research, reading or academic writing, whilst gaining clinical experience.
"The career of a therapeutic radiographer is not well known throughout the country and is not often talked about in schools and colleges. I learned about the career through a personal experience of where my dad was auditing the department in another hospital (whilst having his own experience of the role too) and was able to get some information about the career and apprenticeship. Also, there were many opportunities in the hospital to learn about the course such as open evenings and many radiographers were happy for anyone to get in touch with them to ask any questions and were very helpful in my own experience."
"The role is challenging, however the outcome that you have participated in helping many patients throughout their cancer journey, (which is often one of the most mentally and physically challenging parts of their lives) is worth it. Being able to provide comfort and empathy towards a patient who you get to know almost every day is very rewarding.
Having only started the apprenticeship a few days ago, I feel that I have already made an impact to someone’s journey helping to liaise with other radiographers and clinicians to provide a smooth journey in the department and ensure they get the best care possible.
I am hoping to qualify in the next 3 years and gain a BSc in Radiotherapy and Oncology at the University of UWE."
"Whilst waiting for the apprenticeship to come out, I was fortunate enough to volunteer in the department for 6 months at James Cook University Hospital and gain a basic awareness of the career and experience the day to day challenges a radiographer faces. Having a rotational volunteering rota, I got to experience most of the routes that you can follow, after gaining the degree such as: a dosimetrist, working in mould room, a pre-treatment and post-treatment post and many more. I learned a lot about the course, gained a lot of support and I am looking forward to learning more about Radiotherapy and Oncology and fulfil my career aspiration of becoming a Therapeutic Radiographer at James Cook University Hospital."
Our 2023 apprentices have all successfully completed their first year of the degree course and are looking forward to starting their second year.
Well done on all your hard work!

"Because we see a variety of patients that require different radiotherapy treatment procedures, being on the job has really benefited my learning style."

Due to the variety of patients and treatment techniques within radiotherapy, every day provides an opportunity to gain experience."
